To the north of the site is Kirkstall Abbey Conservation Area and the Grade I-listed Kirkstall Abbey itself. To bring about the refurbishment of the listed complex, some elements of the listed buildings may, with adequate justification, be demolished to improve the vehicular access. The sites proximity to the nearby retail centre, the good infrastructure link, and the local sports centre make it ideal for residential use. In particular the site would be suitable for schemes for elderly people or other users where the access to local services is likely to be especially favourable. Other favoured users would include community uses and employment.
