Historic Welsh Castle up for auction

A Grade I listed 19th century castle and its extensive estate is due to be sold by Pugh Auctions later this month.

Gwrych Castle, which sits within 160 acres of picturesque grounds near Abergele, played a fascinating role in the lives of the local aristocracy and was once the Welsh country home of the Royal Family.

It was built between 1812 and 1822 by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh as a memorial to his mother’s ancestors, the Lloyds of Gwrych. Winifred Bamford-Hesketh, later Countess of Dundonald, then inherited it in 1894. She died in 1924 and her will declared Gwrych should be bequeathed to King George V so the Royal Family had a permanent base in Wales. This request was declined and it was given to St John of Jerusalem.

By 1989 it was sold to an American and although permission was granted for a transformational restoration project with plans to create an exclusive five-star country retreat, it began to fall into decline. In recent years, action has been taken to restore the castle to its former glory with 65 volunteers involved in the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust.

The sale of property is set to take place at Pugh’s North West property auction at the AJ Bell Stadium in Manchester, on April 17. The full listing for this auction can be found here.

Pugh Managing Director, Paul Thompson said: “It’s a privilege to be auctioning a property whose cultural heritage makes it utterly unique.

“This is a great investment opportunity that would provide the chance to give this historical property a new lease of life and, not surprisingly, we have already seen a great deal of interest.”
