Historic North Wales building is going up for auction

An historic courthouse which closed last year is among a number of buildings up for auction next week. The former Dolgellau Magistrates Court is listed to go under the hammer at leading auction firm Pugh’s sale in Manchester on October 17.

The Grade-II listed former court building has a floorspace of over 4,000 sq ft and currently contains a large court room and associated office areas and amenities with a guide price for the property of £70,000.

Designed by architect Edward Haycock, whose other projects included the vast Glynllifon country house in Carmarthenshire, the building was completed in 1825 as the county hall and 19th Century administrative headquarters of Meirionnydd.

Magistrates held regular hearings in the building and judges would visit for the Quarter Sessions and latterly for Crown Court hearings. The North Wales coroner also used the building to hold inquests.

It is the town’s second courthouse. The first building, now home to Y Sospan tea rooms, was an administrative centre for the town before the completion of the newer building in 1825. The magistrates court building at Holyhead is also up for sale after it was closed earlier this year.

Another building due to go under the hammer is the former Pontsian Primary School in Ceredigion. This closed in July last year when it merged with a number of other schools into a 3-19 super school in Llandysul.

Pugh managing director Paul Thompson said: “Dolgellau Magistrates Court and Pontsian Primary School are both unique buildings in some of the most beautiful areas of the country.

“There is a range of potential development opportunities available that would give these properties a new lease of life.

“Not surprisingly we have seen a great deal of interest, which is in keeping with the growing appetite among investors from across the country for value for money investment opportunities.”
