Fishing lake and castle included in June auction listings

A fishing lake and a Grade I listed 19th century castle are just some of the 150+ lots due to be sold by Pugh Auctions next week, alongside former banks, council buildings, residential and other commercial properties.

A one and a half acre fishing lake, which comes stocked with 400 carp is to be offered at auction. The former Mills Reservoir, a man-made fishing lake in Rossendale, has been put up for sale at auction with a guide price of £15,000.

Gwrych Castle, which sits within 240 acres of picturesque grounds near Abergele, is also on offer. The castle played a fascinating role in the lives of the local aristocracy and was once the Welsh country home of the Royal Family. It had been due to be offered in the April North West auction, but was withdrawn so that it could be offered with additional land.

The castle was built between 1812 and 1822 by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh as a memorial to his mother’s ancestors, the Lloyds of Gwrych. Winifred Bamford-Hesketh, later Countess of Dundonald, then inherited it in 1894. She died in 1924 and her will declared Gwrych should be bequeathed to King George V so the Royal Family had a permanent base in Wales. This request was declined and it was given to St John of Jerusalem.

Also featured in the June auction listing are a series of former high street banks. Lenders including Natwest, Barclays, Co-op and Britannia have offered a number of their former premises from across the UK (including Cumbria, Carmarthen, Otley, Shropshire, County Durham and Blackpool) as they close the number of branches.

Other lots on offer include former day nurseries, public houses, a nightclub

Paul Thompson at Pugh said: “We receive instructions from a wide range of clients, so our lots reflect that. Within the June auctions alone we have seen numerous commercial and residential lots, former council properties and banks, a fishing lake, an art college and a castle being offered.”

The firm’s next property auctions will take place at Elland Road football ground in Leeds on 5 June and at the AJ Bell Stadium in Manchester on 7 June.
