Bolton’s iconic 19th century iron church to be sold at auction

Bolton’s grade II‐listed ‘Iron Church’ on Blackburn Road is to be put up for sale by auction with a guide price of £195,000.

Originally constructed of corrugated iron, the church was replaced by the current building in 1897, retaining its ‘iron church’ title. Industrialist Lord Leverhulme was the main benefactor of the church’s large Sunday school and the Iron Church saw its last congregation worship in the building in 1990.

Since then it has had a number of different uses including as an antiques centre, a furniture store and most recently as a wedding venue.

Now the 6,000 sq ft sandstone building is to be put up for auction, appearing in our upcoming July online sale.

Pugh managing director Paul Thompson: “The Iron Church is a spectacular building in a very prominent and busy mixed‐use position in Bolton, opposite the Blackburn Road mosque development. It sits on a quarter‐acre site and has been refurbished internally, while still retaining lots of its unique original features.

“We believe the property would be suitable for a variety of uses including conversion to residential accommodation and it will be fascinating to see what becomes of it in the hands of a creative and forward‐thinking investor.”

Pugh has continued to hold property auctions since the government introduced social distancing regulations in March by switching its operations to its existing online auction platform. Its April, May and June sales of property and land across the UK generated £7m in sales.

Bidding for the online auction opens at 10am on 14 July and bidders must have registered by no later than 3pm on 13 July in order to bid.
